“The millions of members and supporters of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare are truly gratified that Rep. John Larson is re-introducing his Social Security 2100 Act — and that the bill will finally get a fair hearing in the United States Congress. The legislation to expand and protect Social Security for America’s retirees was first introduced in 2014, but languished under GOP control of the House. I was proud to join Congressman Larson this morning at the U.S. Capitol as he announced the bill’s re-introduction.
For years, our members have told us that they want and need their Social Security benefits boosted. They want fairer cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) that reflect retirees’ true living expenses. They want the wealthy to start paying their fair share in Social Security payroll contributions. Congressman Larson’s Social Security 2100 Act achieves all of that – and more.
Not only do our members support this bill, the American public has affirmed the principles that it embodies in poll after poll, across party lines and age groups. Meanwhile, the public has roundly rejected conservative proposals for ‘reforming’ Social Security, including privatization, raising the retirement age and imposing stingier COLA formulas.
For years, fiscal hawks have told us that the only way to ‘save’ Social Security is to cut benefits for future retirees. Congressman Larson’s bill is a resounding rebuke to those claims. The Social Security Act 2100 keeps the program financially sound for most of this century while boosting benefits for millions of beneficiaries.
