Newly leaked audio from Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton underscores why Social Security is on the ballot this election. Speaking before a group of high-dollar donors, Paxton, who has been publicly evasive on his stance on Social Security, let slip how he really feels about the most popular government program in U.S. history. Paxton happily tells his wealthy friends that “We have to suck it up” and accept cuts to “mandatory spending” – code for Social Security and Medicare.

After promising cuts to the retirement security that Texans have paid for, Paxton then laughs with his wealthy donors about the need to cut taxes for themselves.

Paxton clearly feels comfortable around his donors to share his true intentions, and that should make Texas voters feel deeply uncomfortable. The Social Security trust fund reserves are estimated to run dry in the next few years. When that happens, Texans on Social Security will face an estimated $489 cut to their monthly Social Security check. The Senators elected this year will decide the fate of the Social Security benefits that we all have paid for.

Social Security is the cornerstone of affordability for seniors. Five million Texans receive Social Security, and it puts over $112 billion dollars into the state’s economy every year. Social Security is a promise, and it is one that needs to be kept. Ken Paxton has shown his true colors, and on November 3rd Social Security should be top of mind for Texas voters.  – Max Richtman, National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare-PAC Board
