Protect Our Earned Benefits Under Social Security and Medicare Petition
WHEREAS: President Roosevelt and Congress created Social Security in 1935 to protect retired Americans from a poverty-ridden old age;
WHEREAS: President Lyndon Johnson and Congress created Medicare in 1965 to guarantee access to health insurance for Americans age 65 and older;
WHEREAS: America’s more than 45 million retired workers, and more than 8 million disabled beneficiaries have paid (and 178 million workers are currently paying) their hard-earned money into Social Security and Medicare; and
WHEREAS: Social Security and Medicare represent a commitment between the government and its citizens;
Therefore, Be It Resolved: One of my top priorities as a citizen and voter is the protection of Social Security and Medicare for current and future retirees. Among your top priorities as my elected representatives should be to defeat benefit cuts and privatization proposals that threaten my retirement security.
Be It Further Resolved: I urge you to work closely with the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare to protect the benefits we have worked for, paid for and earned.
