News Release

“On the 84th anniversary of Social Security, we still must defend the program from a constant onslaught of disinformation from its opponents.   After more than eight decades of providing workers and their families with financial security upon retirement, disability or death, fiscal hawks continue their assault on the program, calling for “entitlement reform” – which really means benefit cuts, raising the retirement age, and privatization.  Now they endeavor to suppress support from younger generations by telling Millennials that Social Security will not be there for them in the future.  Surely such a crucial issue should figure into the 2020 presidential campaign, yet none of the Democratic primary debates to date have included even a single question about Social Security.  Fortunately, many of the presidential candidates (and a majority of the House) support commonsense legislation to put Social Security on a sound financial footing for the future.  Rep. John Larson’s Social Security 2100 Act strengthens and expands the program – rather than weakening and cutting it, as “entitlement reformers” would do.  We at the National Committee have been fighting hard for Rep. Larson’s bill and expect the full House to pass it this fall.  That would be a fitting way to commemorate the anniversary of America’s most successful social insurance program, which has kept generations of seniors, the disabled, and their families from falling into poverty – and provided them the dignity that comes with basic financial security.” – Max Richtman, president and CEO of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.
