News Release

Republican Rep. Chris Smith (NJ-04) has won the endorsement of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare in his re-election bid.  Congressman Smith has committed himself to protecting Social Security and Medicare from benefit cuts.  He also has cosponsored legislation to improve cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) and to expand benefits for Medicare recipients.

Our nation needs Chris’ leadership, vision and courage to vote in the interests of the residents of New Jersey’s 4th district in the fight for working families and older Americans,” said National Committee President Max Richtman. “He is well-prepared to serve the needs of seniors and will make the preservation and enhancement of Social Security and Medicare a priority in Congress.”

In addition to his support for seniors’ earned benefits, Rep. Smith has been a trailblazer in promoting enhanced federal funding for Alzheimer’s research, treatments and one day finding a cure.  This includes, among many important policies, expanding programs for caregivers.

The National Committee supports candidates on both sides of the aisle – both incumbents and challengers – who understand and support the critical roles that Social Security and Medicare play in the retirement and health security of our nation’s older citizens and their families.
