NCPSSM President and CEO Max Richtman appeared with former Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D-FL) today to affirm the endorsement of her U.S. Senate campaign by the organization’s PAC. At a ceremony at Teamsters Local 769 in North Miami, Richtman hailed Mucarsel-Powell as a champion for Florida’s seniors — and a welcome alternative to incumbent GOP Senator Rick Scott, who appears determined to undermine Social Security and Medicare.

“Rick Scott has perhaps one of the most egregious records in the U.S. Senate when it comes to seniors’ earned benefits. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, on the other hand, was a leader in the effort to lower seniors’ prescription drugs costs — and she cosponsored legislation that would expand Social Security’s modest benefits and extend the program’s solvency.  During her tenure in the U.S. House, she stood by Florida seniors time after time.” – Max Richtman, President and CEO, National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare

Rep. Mucarsel-Powell earned a 100% rating on NCPSSM’s legislative scorecard, while Senator Scott scored ZERO percent, based on their votes on legislation crucial to seniors. Senator Scott proposed to “sunset” all federal programs after five years unless Congress and the President acted to renew them. Originally, this reckless proposal included Social Security and Medicare, which millions of Florida seniors depend on for financial and health security. Senator Scott would have shredded the social insurance safety net for some of the state’s most vulnerable citizens.

“Debbie Mucarsel-Powell walks the walk when it comes to protecting Florida seniors. She lives with her elderly mother and is her primary caretaker — so she understands the critical role both Medicare and Social Security play for older people. In what is likely to be a closely divided 119th Congress, Floridians should send Rick Scott packing and elect Debbie Mucarsel-Powell to the U.S. Senate as a crucial vote for Florida seniors.” – Max Richtman
