Citing a deep concern for the future well-being of Virginia’s seniors, the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, with more than 50,000 members and supporters in Virginia, has endorsed former governor Terry McAuliffe in the Virginia governor’s race.

“Terry McAuliffe will stand up for seniors as Virginia’s next governor. He has a deep understanding of federal and state policy issues that impact older Virginians. Not only will he work to improve their health and economic status, he’s a staunch defender against any proposals which would weaken or threaten seniors’ quality of life,” said Max Richtman, President and CEO of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.

Over 15% of Virginia’s population are over the age of 65. These seniors need a governor like Terry McAuliffe who understands the challenges they face and is committed to strengthening protections for nursing home care and voting rights, as well as lowering costs for prescription drugs.

“His Republican opponent has offered no plans for helping older Virginians and has even remarked that the vitally important 2018 expansion of Medicaid in the state was ‘sad.’ This expansion, which Terry worked tirelessly during his administration to enact, extended health coverage to more than half a million uninsured in Virginia, including older adults,” said Richtman. The National Committee supports Medicaid expansion since it provides needed healthcare to older adults who do not yet qualify for Medicare.

“As Virginia’s next governor I will fight to ensure Virginia seniors have quality, affordable health care and prescription drugs, and the resources they need to age in place,” said Terry McAuliffe. “I am honored to have the endorsement and support of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare and look forward to working together on the issues that matter most to older Virginians.”
