News Release

“We applaud members of the House Ways and Means Committee for not moving forward on legislation which would have cut benefits for 15 million Social Security beneficiaries in an attempt to improve the current Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) formula impacting many federal, state and local government pensioners. While the National Committee is sympathetic to efforts to simplify and improve WEP for the millions of teachers, firefighters and local government workers it adversely effects, this legislation would have cut benefits for 10 beneficiaries for each beneficiary who’d see an increase.  We believe the better solution is to repeal this unfair and onerous benefit cut.

As detailed in our letter to the Committee, the unintended consequences of this bill would have threated benefits for many to improve benefits for a few.  The National Committee stands ready to work with Members of Congress to modify this legislation to resolve this difficult issue.”…Max Richtman, NCPSSM President/CEO
