The National Committee to Preserve Social Security & Medicare PAC, one of the nation’s premier political organizations advocating for older adults, today is endorsing Will Lawrence for Congress. MI-07 is one of the most important House races in the country, and electing Will Lawrence will send a loud message to Washington that seniors have had enough of the attacks on the benefits that they have earned.
While the Administration targeted the Social Security Administration by cutting staff and jeopardizing Americans’ personal data, Tom Barrett voted for the Big, Ugly Bill, which cut a trillion dollars from Medicaid, devastating hospitals and nursing homes.
Unless we elect a pro-senior majority, the next Congress could be even worse. Speaker Mike Johnson says he has a plan to “adjust” Social Security next year — but that’s just doublespeak for cutting earned benefits. With the Social Security Trust Fund estimated to soon run dry, Michigan’s seniors should pay attention. Rep. Barrett earned a 0% on the National Committee’s Congressional scorecard and is a member of the Republican Study Committee, which has proposed reducing lifetime Social Security benefits for future beneficiaries and forcing Americans to work longer.
In Congress, Will Lawrence will take a different path. Social Security is nonpartisan, and it is supported by all Americans, Democrats, Republicans, and independents. He knows that Social Security is a promise that the government has made to the people that must be kept. Will Lawrence will vote to protect Social Security from cuts and privatizers and will fight for the health and economic security of Michigan’s seniors.
