The National Committee to Preserve Social Security & Medicare PAC, one of the nation’s premier political organizations advocating for older adults, today is endorsing Sean McCann to represent Michigan’s Fourth Congressional District. In the Michigan legislature, McCann has built a track record of delivering for his constituents, lowering costs, and expanding health care. Michiganders will need his voice and his vote in Congress to defend their Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
Nearly 180,000 people in MI-04 receive Social Security benefits. If Congress doesn’t act, in a few short years the average Michigander on Social Security will see their monthly benefits automatically cut by more than $520. Speaker Mike Johnson says Republicans have a plan to “adjust” Social Security in the next Congress — but hasn’t disclosed what that plan is.
But Bill Huizenga does have a plan, and it would be a disaster for seniors. Huizenga is one of the architects of a plan that would jam through changes to Social Security and Medicare on an expedited timeline in a lame duck Congress, bypassing regular order in an attempt to skirt public scrutiny. And what would those changes look like? Huizenga’s record paints an ugly picture. He has voted consistently to cut Social Security and voted for the Big Ugly Bill that slashed Medicaid and SNAP by over a trillion dollars.
“I am proud to have the support of some of our strongest advocates for protecting a secure retirement for all,” said Sean McCann. “I hear from voters of all ages that they are concerned Social Security won’t be there for them when they retire. While Bill Huizenga has voted multiple times to slash Medicare and raise the retirement age, I will fight to protect these programs from privatization so that every American can retire with dignity.”
Bill Huizenga has spent a long career in Washington and cannot be trusted to protect Social Security. Sean McCann can. He will be an ally for beneficiaries who rely on the benefits they rightfully earned – seniors, people with disabilities, and their families.
The National Committee looks forward to seeing Sean elected in November, so he can continue his unwavering support for older Michiganders.
