“The National Committee to Preserve Social Security & Medicare PAC, one of the nation’s premier political organizations advocating for older adults, is proud to endorse Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti to represent Pennsylvania’s 8th district in the U.S. House. Mayor Cognetti has built a track record of delivering for her constituents while taking on the establishment. NEPA’s seniors will need her voice and her vote in Congress to defend their earned benefits.

This Congress has been a disaster for seniors. Republicans stood by as Elon Musk, who has called Social Security a “Ponzi scheme,” let DOGE ravage the Social Security Administration and steal Americans’ personal data. Cognetti’s opponent, incumbent Rep. Rob Bresnahan, helped Trump and the GOP enact tax cuts for the super-rich — paid for by cutting a trillion dollars from Medicaid and SNAP.  In so doing, Bresnahan patently broke his promise to protect the healthcare of his constituents in PA-08.

Nearly 200,000 people in the district receive Social Security benefits. If Congress doesn’t act, in a few short years the average Pennsylvanian retiree on Social Security will see their monthly benefits automatically cut by more than $500.  Speaker Mike Johnson says Republicans have a plan to “adjust” Social Security in the next Congress — but hasn’t disclosed what that plan is.

Rob Bresnahan and his party cannot be trusted to protect Social Security, but Paige Cognetti can.  She will be an ally for beneficiaries who rely on their earned benefits – seniors, people with disabilities, and their families.

The National Committee looks forward to seeing Paige Cognetti elected in November, so she can continue her unwavering support for the well-being of the people of this district.” – Max Richtman, National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare-PAC Board
