On behalf of the tens of thousands of Virginia seniors we represent, the National Committee to Preserve Social Security & Medicare-PAC is proud to endorse Abigail Spanberger for Virginia Governor. While the PAC typically only endorses candidates in federal races, today, on the 90th anniversary of the Social Security Act becoming law, it is fitting to make a rare exception. Social Security legislation spearheaded by Congresswoman Spanberger and signed into law on January 5, 2025, improved the lives of millions of seniors across the country, including tens of thousands in Virginia.

Decades ago, reforms were put into law that unfairly reduced or eliminated the Social Security benefits of millions of public sector workers and their spouses. These provisions, known as the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO), unfairly reduced the Social Security benefits of millions of hardworking teachers, firefighters, police officers, and many more.

For decades, the prospect of getting the WEP/GPO repealed seemed hopeless. Congresswoman Spanberger did not let these decades of gridlock deter her. She was a relentless fighter for Virginia’s retirees, building a genuine bipartisan coalition that forced Congressional leadership to take a vote on her bill, the Social Security Fairness Act. It passed with overwhelming bipartisan support and has already put billions of dollars back into the pockets of retired public service workers.

“I’m deeply grateful to the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare for their decades of advocacy on behalf of Virginia’s seniors — and their relentless efforts to get my bipartisan Social Security Fairness Act across the finish line and signed into law. Social Security’s 90th birthday is a reminder of the promises we’ve made to hardworking Americans and the work still ahead to protect them. I’m proud to earn NCPSSM’s endorsement to serve as the next Governor of Virginia — and as Governor, I will always support the dignity, economic security, and well-being of Virginia’s seniors.” – Abigail Spanberger

Repealing the WEP/GPO is lifechanging for millions of seniors, who now are receiving the retirement security that they deserve. In Congress, Abigail Spanberger did what many thought was impossible and brought Democrats and Republicans together to deliver real relief to Social Security beneficiaries. She has truly earned the endorsement of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security & Medicare-PAC.   – Max Richtman, National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare-PAC Board
