Just Enough for SSA to Tread Water in Omnibus Bill

“We are grateful the Omnibus appropriations bill includes a $785 million increase in the Social Security Administration’s operating budget. But we are disappointed that this amount barely will enable the agency to tread water. As a result, it is unlikely that SSA will be able to substantially decrease the huge backlog in Social Security Disability Insurance claims (and adjudication) — or significantly improve diminished customer service. We appreciate the efforts of our allies in the House and Senate leadership and on the Appropriation Committees to address SSA’s chronic underfunding, and we realize that their options were limited because the top line increase in non-defense discretionary spending was insufficient to address many domestic priorities.” – Max Richtman, President and CEO, National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare
