    NEWS RELEASE

Medicare Advocacy Organization Challenges Misleading Claims on Health Care Reform

National Committee Launches Seniors' "Truth Squad"

America 's seniors have a huge stake in the national health care reform debate. Unfortunately, well-publicized misinformation campaigns about reform efforts are being circulated in the news and at public forums. This has led many older American's to believe health care reform will destroy Medicare when, in fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Without health care reform, Medicare will continue to suffer from skyrocketing costs associated with general health care inflation, until neither seniors nor the government will be able to afford the program. This inevitably will lead to unprecedented cuts in Medicare-cuts that unlike current health care reform proposals-will directly target seniors' benefits.

To counter the scare-tactics aimed at seniors, the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare has mobilized a Truth Squad to give seniors the facts about how health care reform will benefit Medicare beneficiaries.

    The Truth Squad campaign includes:

    • A 3-part Web Video series dealing with some of the most egregious myths like "death panels"
    • The Truth Squad Tool Kit for members and supporters
    • Petitions and Letters to Congress: already, more than 78,000 National Committee members and supporters have signed letters and 46,000 have signed petitions urging passage of health care reform which also strengthens Medicare.
    • An online Legislative Action Center with sample letters that can be emailed directly to Congressional representatives.
    • A downloadable Truth Squad badge and logo are available on our website and Facebook page .
