    NEWS RELEASE

Social Security and the Presidential Candidates

National Seniors’ Advocate Glad to See Social Security Getting Attention On the Presidential Campaign Trail

“Social Security is a critical issue not just for seniors but also for their families, the disabled, and survivors. It was encouraging to see over the weekend, our Presidential candidates discussing their Social Security proposals. But let's be clear, privatization is not a plan to provide a long-term solvency solution for Social Security. The Bush administration's privatization plan, which has now been adopted by Senator McCain, has already been rejected by the American people. Voters of all ages want to hear from our Presidential candidates about their policy proposals to strengthen not undermine this vital program.”...Barbara B. Kennelly, President/CEO

Millions of National Committee members and supporters oppose the privatization of Social Security because it would:

    • Divert money out of Social Security and into private accounts.
    • Make huge cuts in Social Security benefits.
    • Increase the public debt by trillions of dollars.
    • Shift risk to individual retirees.
