THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE TO PRESERVE SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE
~ Celebrating 25 Years of Advocacy for Older Americans ~

    February 7, 2008

    NEWS RELEASE

Seniors Included in Senate Stimulus Package
Improved Plan Will Now Go to the House

“Congratulations to members of the Senate for understanding the need to craft a stimulus plan which considers all needy Americans, young and old alike. We're confident members of the House will also act quickly to adopt this improved stimulus plan. We know seniors need the money, will spend the money and can contribute to this economic recovery effort.” Barbara B. Kennelly, President/CEO

Older Americans living on a fixed income feel the pressure of high prices and the slowing economy as acutely as anyone does.  Many of these seniors are in the direst need and most likely to spend any additional income on necessary resources such as medicine, utilities, food and clothing. The Senate stimulus plan passed today acknowledges this fact and includes 20 million American seniors ignored in previous stimulus proposals.

The National Committee's millions of members and supporters have been calling, writing, and emailing Congress this week to ensure America 's fastest growing demographic is not ignored in this economic recovery effort.   Today it appears Washington is listening and older Americans are now one step closer to being included in this latest economic stimulus proposal.
