THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE TO PRESERVE SOCIAL SECURITY & MEDICARE February 15, 2012 NEWS RELEASESocial Security Promise Quilt Campaign Unites Young and Old to Highlight Need for Strengthening Social Security
One of the nation's largest and most influential senior's advocacy organizations, the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, today launched a nationwide online campaign called the Social Security Promise Quilt at http://protectthispromise.org/ . Bringing generations together to share their stories about the vital role Social Security plays in their lives, the Promise Quilt allows users to upload images and stories as quilt squares, which are added to a virtual quilt in the shape of a United States map. Participants can read Social Security stories submitted by other people all over the country. The campaign concludes in July 2012. The Social Security Promise Quilt illustrates the interconnectivity of a program that touches virtually every American family whether the beneficiary is a future retiree, already retired, disabled or received survivor benefits as a child. Social Security is an American idea - not a partisan issue or a matter of age. It has been protecting American families for over 75 years. Now, some in Washington want to cut benefits for political reasons or to solve a deficit that Social Security did not create. Americans understand the lasting value of Social Security and the Promise Quilt gives them another opportunity to stand together to prevent Congress from enacting threatened cuts.
