THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE TO PRESERVE SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE
~ Celebrating 25 Years of Advocacy for Older Americans ~

    October 2, 2008

    NEWS RELEASE

New Hampshire Seniors, Advocates Rally to "Keep Wall Street Away from Social Security"

In response to the recent crisis on Wall Street, a concerned group of New Hampshire members and supporters of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, in conjunction with EngAging NH, a citizen voice for the aging experience, will assemble in the lobby of the Legislative Office Building, 33 N. State St., Concord , to "Keep Wall Street Away from Social Security." Scheduled for Wednesday, October 8th beginning at 9:00 am, speakers will include Dr. James H. Schulz, Emeritus Professor of Economics, Brandeis University, co-author, Aging Nation-The Economics and Politics of Growing Older in America, State Senator Margaret "Maggie" Wood Hassan, Senate President Pro Tem, and Social Security beneficiaries who will discuss how their retiree, survivor or disability benefits have helped them and would be harmed by privatization. A Fact Sheet detailing the economic impact of Social Security privatization on New Hampshire beneficiaries will be distributed.  The event is open to the public.

More than many other federal programs, Social Security does exactly what it was designed to do - it gives retired people a secure, basic income for as long as they live.  As home equity evaporates, investment income plummets and healthcare costs skyrocket unchecked, programs such as Social Security and Medicare must continue to provide a vital lifeline for millions of American families during this and any other economic crisis. Without this critical safety-net program, over half of all older Americans would fall into poverty.

The National Committee members and supporters want Presidential and Congressional candidates to make their plans for Social Security clear.  Social Security privatization through private accounts would increase retirement risks, severely cut Social Security benefits, and add trillions of dollars to the federal debt.  We cannot allow political candidates to dodge and weave or parse words on this critical issue.  New Hampshirites will rally in Concord to deliver our message loud and clear...privatization is not an option.
