     National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare announces
    2007 Recipient of Lifetime Achievement Award

    The nation's #1 advocacy group that fights to protect Social Security and Medicare has selected Bill Benson, of Marriotsville Maryland , to receive their prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. Each year, the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare (NCPSSM) honors an individual for their unparalleled commitment to older Americans.  

    Bill Benson has worked in the aging field for 33 years.  From Capitol Hill to the Department of Health and Human Services and beyond, Benson has devoted a lifetime to developing and advocating for effective national aging policies.  The award presentation will take place at 3:00pm, June 25, 2007 at NCPSSM headquarters, 10 G Street NE , Washington , D.C.

    "Bill Benson's expertise on issues ranging from long term care to elder abuse has shaped many important policy initiatives which improved the lives of millions of seniors and their families.   Bill's work from the local to the federal level has impacted virtually every major aging organization in our nation.  He clearly loves his work and America 's seniors have benefited from his dedication and commitment.     Benson's policy career spans three decades from California to Washington, D.C.   He was the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Aging at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services during the Clinton Administration.  Before that he was a subcommittee staff director of both House and Senate Aging Committees.  Benson played a major policy role in amending the Older Americans Act to create Title VII Vulnerable Elder Rights Protection, developing nursing home reform legislation and numerous Medicare and Medicaid provisions, women's health initiatives, pension provisions and many other notable legislative initiatives. Since 1998, Benson has been a health industry consultant working with clients such as the CDC, various state departments of aging and the American Society of Aging.
