  • THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE TO PRESERVE SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE
~ Protecting the Health and Economic Future of Older Americans ~

    June 14, 2010

    NEWS RELEASE

National Committee President/CEO, Barbara Kennelly, Assumes Chairmanship of the Leadership Council of Aging Organizations

"We stand at a major crossroads in the history of our nation's social insurance and aging programs. Millions of Americans rely on Social Security, Medicare, and other critical aging services each year, and never more so than during this current economic crisis.  However, these programs continue to be targeted for cuts, which would touch the lives of virtually every American family.  It's our challenge as senior advocates to guarantee Congress and the White House do not turn back the clock on America's senior programs" - Barbara B. Kennelly

The 64 senior advocacy groups that comprise the Leadership Council of Aging Organizations have spent decades educating and advocating on behalf of the nation's senior citizens.  From Social Security to long-term care issues, the LCAO has been a leading voice in the debate on how best to serve America 's senior population - current and future.

The Leadership Council of Aging Organizations chairmanship term lasts for one year and has passed to Barbara Kennelly, President and CEO of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare. Kennelly is a former Congresswoman and ranking member on the House Ways and Means subcommittee on Social Security.  She was also a Social Security Administration counselor during the Clinton Administration and currently serves as a member of the Social Security Administration's advisory board.

Kennelly pledges that protection of vital seniors programs will be an LCAO priority in coming months.  The LCAO will also continue to be a strong voice on a number of other critical issues; including, implementation of the new health care reform legislation's Medicare provisions, Social Security benefit protection for seniors and continued Congressional support for vital Older Americans Act programs.

"The LCAO is organized and energized on behalf of America's seniors. We must ensure America 's social insurance safety net will remain strong and secure for today's retirees and future generations to come." - Barbara B. Kennelly
