THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE TO PRESERVE SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE January 3, 2008 NEWS RELEASEAs Iowa Caucuses, Presidential Candidates Detail Their Positions on Social Security and Medicare The next President will face many challenges, among them the need to guide our country through the changes that come with an aging population. That's why the National Committee, on behalf of its millions of members and supporters, presented each Presidential candidate with 14 questions on issues such as: Social Security, Medicare, pensions, healthcare reform, long-term care, prescription drugs, and the federal budget. Five Democratic presidential candidates provided detailed responses to our survey; Senator Joe Biden, Senator Hillary Clinton, Senator Chris Dodd, John Edwards and Senator Barack Obama. Rudy Giuliani and Mike Huckabee declined to respond while the remaining candidates have not yet replied. Voters of all ages have a stake in policy decisions affecting how our nation prepares for an aging America . It is discouraging that two candidates specifically declined to answer questions so important to seniors and their families . "As the nation's #1 advocacy group that fights to protect Social Security and Medicare we know we may not agree with every candidate's position; however, our members are eager for straight forward answers on these issues beyond the rhetoric of the campaign trail. Ultimately, we hope every presidential candidate will offer detailed answers to these key policy questions"...Barbara B. Kennelly, President/CEO The full 2008 National Committee Presidential Candidate Questionnaire is online at: http://www.ncpssm.org/presidential_questionnaire/ . Media Inquiries to:
