  • THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE TO PRESERVE SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE
~ Protecting the Health and Economic Future of Older Americans ~

    September 28, 2009

    MEDIA ADVISORY

Seniors Urge Congress to Pass Emergency COLA Legislation

National Seniors' Advocate Will Present 120,000 petitions to Congress Urging a One-Time Payment in 2010

For millions of American seniors, Social Security has been the one stable source of income they can count on during this economic recession.  That's why news that next year could be the first time beneficiaries won't receive a cost of living adjustment since it was created in 1975 is especially troubling.

The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare will join sponsors of the "Emergency Senior Citizens Relief Act", Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) at a Capitol Hill news conference to present petitions signed by more than a hundred thousand seniors nationwide urging passage of a $250 one-time COLA payment in 2010.

    Date:  Wednesday, September 30th
    Time:  10:30-11:00am
Location:  Senate Swamp, corner of Delaware and Constitution Avenues

Participants in Wednesday's news conference include:

    • Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR), sponsors of "Emergency Senior Citizens Relief Act"
    • Barbara B. Kennelly, President/CEO, National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare
    • Esther Lenette , Social Security recipient, Bethesda , Maryland
