THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE TO PRESERVE SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE
    ~ 4.6 Million Seniors ~ One Voice ~ No Privatization ~

    November 8, 2006

    NEWS RELEASE

PA Voters Say No Thank You to Private Accounts Advocate
    Sen. Rick Santorum
Ballots Cast Against Incumbents Were Also Votes Against Social Security Privatization

From Pennsylvania to Florida, voters have cast their ballots to "privatize" Congressional incumbents who've pushed for Social Security private accounts. Senator Rick Santorum was one of the President's strongest privatization allies. He sponsored private accounts legislation and wrote the privatization playbook used by Senate Republicans last year to promote the President's plan. In November 2005 when Senator Santorum attempted to bring his private accounts legislation straight to the Senate floor without committee action, the National Committee mobilized a successful membership response to help defeat his efforts. Yet, despite repeated rejections by the American people, Senator Santorum continued to express his support for privatization as recently as the September 3rd PA Senate debate, stating: "I have been an advocate for…personal retirement accounts".

"Pennsylvanians were clearly ready for a change. While many different issues drove voters to the polls yesterday, chief among them is the President's continuing plans to push the privatization of Social Security. Once again Americans have voiced their opposition to private accounts by casting votes against the President's key privatization supporters"…Barbara B. Kennelly, President/CEO.

The National Committee and its 4.6 million members and supporters understand that privatization does nothing to improve the program's long-term solvency. We support a true bi-partisan effort to strengthen Social Security but that can't happen until the polarizing and politicizing issue of private accounts is off the table.
