THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE TO PRESERVE SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE March 26, 2010 NEWS RELEASEEducation Outreach on New Health Care Law Begins for Seniors Statement from former Congresswoman Barbara Kennelly, President and CEO of National Committee "The historic passage of the Health Care and Education Affordability Reconciliation Act of 2010 marks the beginning of many long-awaited improvements to Medicare. For millions of seniors, the new reality is a package of benefits that includes an immediate $250 rebate for any senior who falls into the Part D donut hole this year, a 50% discount for brand name drugs beginning in 2011 for seniors in the donut hole, improvements to preventive health care services including an annual wellness visit, expanded protections for vulnerable seniors and much more. While the political rhetoric and partisan critiques of the health care bill continue, the National Committee is already preparing a series of educational materials and outreach strategies to help seniors and their families understand the array of provisions in the new law. We will be participating in town halls, forums, conferences and community meetings as well as disseminating information via mailings, newsletters, videos and briefings. Seniors deserve to know the facts. Health care reform does not cut their coverage or imperil the Medicare program; it cuts the rate of growth of their out-of-pocket costs and adds years to Medicare's solvency. This is reform they can believe in." Barbara B. Kennelly, President and CEO, NCPSSM
