NEWS RELEASE
"Modest savings hardly elevate an individual from the ranks of the needy. This common sense legislation sponsored by Congressman Doggett is the best remedy for those individuals who have previously been excluded from the prescription drug benefit due to their disciplined savings habits."
Barbara B. Kennelly, President and CEO
The National Committee Supports "Prescription Coverage Now Act"
Legislation will Raise Asset Limits and Streamline the Subsidy application process
An estimated 3 to 4 million low income seniors are still not enrolled in Medicare's Part D prescription drug program, even though they qualify for subsidies. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services must do a better job of reaching out to these seniors. The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, on behalf of our 4 million members and supporters, urges the passage of legislation introduced by Congressman Lloyd Doggett to improve the Part D subsidy process.
The current Part D asset test also penalizes many low-income seniors merely for having limited financial assets. Seniors should not be punished for their responsible savings habits. This legislation would raise these unreasonable asset limits allowing low-income seniors to qualify for the assistance they need.
The National Committee is proud to offer our support for the "Prescription Coverage Now Act" and National Committee President/CEO, Barbara B. Kennelly, will join Rep. Doggett to endorse this legislation at a news conference on Thursday; March 15th at 1:00pm in B-318 Rayburn HOB.
