THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE TO PRESERVE SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE May 9 , 2007 News Release Cutting Social Security Benefits: What's in Your Wallet? American seniors need Social Security. It's a simple truth often lost in the political and philosophical debate swirling around "entitlement reform". A new study released by the National Academy of Social Insurance examines the pocketbook realities facing retirees, now and in the future. Congressional staff and interested press will be briefed on the NASI report on Monday, May 14th from 2:00-3:00pm in Room B318 of the Rayburn House Office Building . Participants include: Virginia Reno, Vice President for Income Security, National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI); Nancy Altman, Social Security Expert and Author of "The Battle for Social Security: From FDR's Vision to Bush's Gamble" and NCPSSM President/CEO, Barbara B. Kennelly. "Proposing drastic entitlement cuts, just as our nation enters the largest demographic shift in our history, is short-sighted. This report lays out in dollars and cents the truth that retirees and their families know all too well...Social Security is the financial foundation keeping millions from poverty. We must refocus this debate on what needs to be done to ensure Social Security is not just preserved but strengthened for future generations." Barbara B. Kennelly, President/CEO A copy of the NASI report will be available after the briefing online at: www.ncpssm.org
