THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE TO PRESERVE SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE
~ Celebrating 25 Years of Advocacy for Older Americans ~

    February 9, 2009

    NEWS ADVISORY

    Commissions, Cuts and Crisis Calls

Economic and Policy Experts Detail Why Balancing the Budget on the Backs of
Social Security and Medicare Just Won't Work

While President Obama and Congress continue work on an economic recovery package, some deficit hawks claim the short-term costs of the economic downturn and the recovery plan should be linked to long-term reductions in Social Security and Medicare. They have characterized expenditures for these critical programs as representing an "entitlement crisis" or a "long-term fiscal crisis". Nothing could be further from the truth.

The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare will convene a panel of respected policy experts to brief Congressional staff and interested press on entitlement commission proposals and the vital roles Social Security and Medicare play during this current economic crisis.

Time: Wednesday, February 18th at 10:30am

Location: B-318 Rayburn House Office Building

    Speakers

    • Honorable Barbara B. Kennelly - President and CEO, National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare; and Former Member of Congress.
    • Henry Aaron, Economic Studies Senior Fellow, The Brookings Institution
    • Virginia Reno, Vice-President for Income Security, National Academy of Social Insurance

A period for questions and answers will follow the presentations.
