THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE TO PRESERVE SOCIAL SECURITY & MEDICARE April 4, 2011 NEWS RELEASEKennelly to Step Down as President and CEO of National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare
Barbara B. Kennelly, President and CEO of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare (NCPSSM), today announced that she will step down as the leader of one of the nation's most successful non-profit organizations for seniors. "There is never an easy time to leave a job you love, but there is a time when you feel you've accomplished what you set out to do. Today's National Committee is one of Washington 's most credible and respected advocacy groups. We have a strong voice on retirement issues; a three million strong membership and supporter base; and, even in these difficult times, a very sound financial footing. That's a legacy I'm proud to pass on to a new leader who will take NCPSSM to the next level of advocacy, education and membership development." Barbara B. Kennelly, President and CEO A former nine-term Congresswoman from Connecticut's first district, Kennelly ensured that the National Committee was on the front line of lobbying and grassroots efforts to protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare - including efforts to pass the Affordable Care Act, and to fight the GOP-led Medicare Modernization Act of 2003, President Bush's failed privatization plan for Social Security, and the Obama Administration's fiscal commission. She also launched the National Committee's efforts to expand into social media, develop internet marketing, and establish a planned giving program. "Barbara Kennelly's leadership at the National Committee was transformational, thanks to her credibility on and off Capitol Hill and her strong commitment to making NCPSSM a leader among social policy advocates. We owe her a debt of gratitude for her tireless work to protect both programs and the millions of people who depend on them,"said Dr. Carroll Estes, NCPSSM's board chair. Kennelly will leave NCPSSM and the NCPSSM Foundation at the end of April following a 9-year tenure. Max Richtman , NCPSSM's Executive Vice-President, will serve as acting CEO while the Board of Directors conducts a national search for a new President/CEO. Richtman joined the committee in 1989.
