National Committee Endorses S. 2930,
the "Consumer Price Index for the Elderly Consumers Act"
October 13, 2004
The Honorable Maria Cantwell 717 Hart Senate Office Building United States Senate Washington, DC 20510
Dear Senator Cantwell:
On behalf of the 3.2 million members and supporters of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, I write to endorse your legislation, S. 2930, the “Consumer Price Index for the Elderly Consumers Act.” We applaud your efforts to require the development of a consumer price index (CPI) that more accurately reflects the inflation rate of consumer spending among seniors than the current CPI, which has been in use since 1975.
We understand that your legislation would require the Bureau of Labor Statistics to prepare and publish an index for each calendar month to be known as the “Consumer Price Index for Elderly Consumers” that indicates changes over time in expenditures for consumption which are typical for individuals in the U. S. who are 62 and older. This Consumer Price Index for Elderly Consumers would then be used when computing cost-of-living increases for Social Security beneficiaries.
We look forward to working with you to secure passage of the “Consumer Price Index for the Elderly Consumers Act,” which we believe would be helpful to millions of Social Security beneficiaries. Thank you for your leadership on this important issue.
Cordially,

Barbara B. Kennelly
President and CEO
