Many of this country's programs for older persons and their families have been targeted for reduction, elimination or privatization. Some Congressional leaders are aggressively pursuing stinging changes to the fiscal policies of social insurance and entitlement programs that benefit seniors and their families. At the same time, home heating costs are rising, healthcare costs run higher and higher and millions of seniors are in critical need of assistance following the hurricane disasters. Yet, Washington's strategies for addressing the challenges of being old are as divided as the current political landscape.

This panel discussion, sponsored by the Leadership Council of Aging Organizations, will examine past and future trends in aging programs, describe how current legislative and fiscal policies will cause real harm to seniors, especially to individuals who are low-to-moderate income, and discuss alternative solutions.
