    NEWS RELEASE

Former Congresswoman and National Aging Advocate Barbara B. Kennelly Appointed to Social Security Advisory Board

Barbara B. Kennelly, President and CEO of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare was sworn in today as the newest member of the Social Security Advisory Board. Mrs. Kennelly was appointed to the board by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and will serve a six year term.

The non-partisan Social Security Advisory Board was created by Congress in 1994 to advise the President, Congress, and Social Security Commissioner on issues affecting Social Security and Supplemental Security income policy.

We are at a public policy crossroads. From pensions to health care and Social Security to personal savings, the challenges facing our retirement and social safety net programs are growing. I am honored to serve on the Social Security Advisory Board during this critical time in our nation’s history as we search for bipartisan approaches to strengthen and preserve Social Security.”
    -- Barbara B. Kennelly, President/CEO

Ms. Kennelly became President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare in April 2002 after a distinguished 23-year career in elected public office. As a Congresswoman, she served 17 years in the United States House of Representatives representing the First District of Connecticut. She was a member of the Ways and Means Committee and ranking member of the Subcommittee on Social Security. After serving in Congress, Mrs. Kennelly was appointed to the position of Counselor to the Commissioner at the Social Security Administration (SSA). She also served on the Policy Committee for the 2005 White House Conference on Aging.
