Carroll Estes, Ph.D., an expert in aging and health policy, begins research sabbatical at National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare
Washington D.C (October 17, 2005) -- Dr. Carroll L. Estes, the founding and former Director of the Institute for Health and Aging at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), has begun a research sabbatical in Washington D.C. at the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare (NCPSSM), to continue her work on long term care, mental health services, and Social Security and Medicare.
Dr. Estes is a Professor of Sociology at UCSF and was Chair of the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, School of Nursing . She is co-founder of Concerned Scientists in Aging and a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. She has authored and co-authored eight books and written more than 150 scientific articles and book chapters.
I am honored that Dr. Estes has chosen to spend her sabbatical at the National Committee, said Barbara B. Kennelly, NCPSSM President and CEO . She is considered one of America 's most knowledgeable scholars in the area of senior care. Her presence can only enhance the mission of the National Committee.
Dr. Estes received her A.B. from Stanford University , her M.A. from Southern Methodist University, and her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California , San Diego . Dr. Estes has received numerous awards for her work, including the highest research honor that UCSF gives, the Faculty Research Lecturer Award.
I'm excited to work with Barbara Kennelly and the National Committee's policy staff as I deepen my understanding of how Washington , DC works, Dr. Estes remarked. My research on Medicare and Social Security will focus on understanding the implications of the Medicare Part D roll out at a national level and the impact of privatization on women and youth.
The National Committee, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization acts in the interests of its membership through advocacy, education, services, grassroots efforts and the leadership of the Board of Directors and professional staff. The work of the National Committee is directed toward developing better-informed citizens and voters.
