    ~ 4 Million Seniors ~ One Voice ~No Privatization ~

"Last week President Bush painted a giant bull's eye on the middle class and took aim. Touting a plan that would cut benefits for 70 percent of future retirees, Bush portrayed his proposal as one that would "protect those who depend on Social Security." "Nothing is further from the truth."
-- Barbara B. Kennelly, President and CEO

Former Congresswoman Barbara Kennelly President Of The National Committee To Preserve Social Security And Medicare States That President Bush's Recent Social Security Proposal
Takes Aim At Middle Class Americans

President Bush's plan would make substantial cuts in promised Social Security benefits for most Americans. All workers earning more than a modest $20,000 a year today would see significant benefit reductions. For example, a worker who earned $37,000 a year – hardly a royal sum – would have a 28 percent benefit cut. A person who earned $58,000 a year would experience a cut of 42 percent.

Since two out of three retirees today rely on Social Security for most of their income, Bush's claim of protection for those who depend on Social Security is certainly misleading. And, given these examples, clearly the bulk of the benefit cuts will come out of the hide of the middle class rather than those who are less reliant on Social Security for their retirement income.
