Reforming Health Care and Medicare

By NCPSSM | May 4, 2009

As part of our ongoing efforts to ensure Medicare is more than just the piggy-bank for system wide health care reform, we’ve run a full page ad in Politico today.

Seniors do have a stake in this historic health care debate and this marks just the beginning of our efforts to ensure seniors are engaged.  Reinvesting at least some of the savings from Medicare reforms back into Medicare is vital for the millions of seniors current and future who depend on this program.

I am 63 years old and recently diagnosed with Alzheimers. I am confused by all the different rules and requirements to qualify for Medicare, Medicaid, etc.

Why can’t we simplify all these crazy rules and regulations so that all of us elderly and ill folks can understand what seeing our doctor, getting treated and tested, and being hospitalized is going to really cost us and/or our families.

I have no prescription coverage and my only medical coverage is from my wife’s employer which only offers a hospital plan which does not even cover the daily room charge much less tests and other misc. expenses.

I recently went to my new doctor and they ran a multitude of tests including a MRI scan of my brain, blood tests, xrays, a prostate biopsy, and other misc. tests. This alone costs my poor wife over $6000 after what the so called hospital and medical coverage paid. She is under extreme stress over my medical bills but valiantly tries to keep it from me.

I do not know what is going to happen, I have applied for Social Security Disability and Medicare but have been turned down. Now I have to retain an attorney who specializes in Medicare and SS Disability to receive what I am legally entitled to, this will require me to turn over $6000 of by SS benifits to the attorney when and if he succeeds in winning the protest.

Why, after working and paying income tax, social security, and other misc. taxes should I have to pay an attorney over $6000 to get what I am legally and moraly entitled to?

Please help me and the millions of people in my position can enjoy their elder years with going through stress and financial worry about benefits we were told we earned and deserved when we retire.

The system isn’t perfect. That’s why this group is trying to convince Congress to improve SS and Medicare – not reduce the coverage and benefits like some of our elected officials would like to do. You need to contact your local senior center and talk to one of their health insurance counselors to help you get through your situation with as much $$ assistance as you’re qualified to receive. Also should probably call Alzheimers Assoc to see what they maybe able to help you with.
