    DIRECTOR OF GRASSROOTS JOB OPENING

    NATIONAL SENIORS ORGANIZATION has an immediate opening for a Director of Grassroots to develop and lead all grassroots activities which will be designed to inspire and engage advocacy, organizing, outreach and education in the DC area and across the nation.

     Essential Functions Include:

    •  Effective promotion of the importance of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid through appropriate grassroots activities including field campaigns and events

    •  Engaging elected officials and candidates to gain support for Social Security, Medicare and other issues of importance to the Committee via public (local and field) events involving seniors, allies and others

    •  Promoting the organization's message and legislative/policy alerts to the field

    •  Supporting Capitol Hill lobbying efforts through contact and interaction at the Congressional district level to promote support for the National Committee's legislative agenda and positions at the grassroots level and in key states/Congressional districts

    •  Developing and implementing effective membership expansion strategies; efforts will also enhance diversity in membership as defined by the National Committee's mission and goals

    •  Developing productive partnerships and coalitions with organizations who share common concerns and goals

    •  Creating and maintaining a viable volunteer program including training, development and implementation of plans that increase the number of volunteers locally and across the nation.

    •  Presenting at conferences and meetings related to National Committee mission and on topics of interest to diverse audiences and organizations

    •  Responsible for the development and interpretation of departmental practices and procedures for grassroots operations

    •  Overseeing and monitoring outside vendor/consultant agreements and work plans related to Grassroots activities

    •  Overseeing partnership activities with other organizations to help build and maintain effective grassroots advocacy efforts

     

    Required Education and Experience:

    Bachelor's degree in business/public administration, human services or related field; graduate degree preferred; minimum of five years leadership, program management and grassroots organizing experience (including previous work with an association or membership organization) is preferred

    Requires:

    Ability to inspire and engage audiences and build consensus and positive relationships; excellent oral and written communication skills and desire for political change are essential. Proven teamwork and leadership ability and the ability to take initiative are required. Previous field experience is required.

    Media Relations Specialist

    Position description:

    Generates media coverage in new and creative ways, and promotes the National Committee's positions, activities and overall reputation among members of the press.

    Responsibilities:

    · Develops and implements innovative local and regional media strategies and campaigns to achieve maximum visibility for the National Committee's local and regional operations.

    · Writes press releases, advisories, letters to the Editor, talking points, blog posts and on-line content.

    · Pitches story ideas, events and announcements to members of local/regional press.

    · Monitors local media coverage of our issues and develops a scouting report on key reporters, editors, and columnists. 

    · Builds relationships with media targets to ensure promotion of NCPSSM messaging priorities.

    · Help maintain a database of key media contacts.

    · Assists in promotion of field activities via NCPSSM social media.

    · Builds and maintains collaborative working relationships with Grassroots and field campaign staff, field partners and other allied organizations to ensure comprehensive approach to press outreach. 

    · Develops accurate, concise strategic messages and statements that can be used by Grassroots, field staff and volunteers in a variety of external media and forums.

    · Provides media advice and assistance to field campaign staff.

    · Assists with video production projects as needed.

    Minimum Education, Experience and Skills:

    Bachelor's degree from an accredited four year college or university and at least 5 years of work experience in communications, journalism or media relations or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

    Excellent verbal and written communication skills, experience covering health care, retirement security or aging issues is preferred, ability to work effectively and calmly in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment;  demonstrated ability to build and maintain successful relationships with national, regional or local media; MS Office proficiency and experience with list management systems required; social media proficiency is required; ability to work well with all staff levels and to build professional credibility required; ability to foster cohesive teamwork among persons with diverse talents, backgrounds and perspectives as well as the ability to think critically and creatively is required.

    Candidate must be self-motivated; details oriented, organized and have the ability to manage multiple ongoing projects. Ability to travel occasionally as needed.
