News Release

“By voting in favor of the Motion to Proceed with Obamacare repeal, the Senate is once again playing Russian roulette with the health of the poor, the sick, and the elderly. None of the tangle of bills that the Senate may now consider does anything to improve healthcare for anyone.  But all of them would rob anywhere from 16-32 million Americans of coverage, devastate those with pre-existing conditions, and make insurance unaffordable for many older Americans.  The future of Medicaid – which impoverished seniors rely on for long term care – hangs in the balance.  We commend Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski for voting against the motion to proceed, and urge other moderates who felt compelled to vote yes to stick to their principles when it comes to voting on actual legislation. Desperate for a political win, and despite the unpopularity of the repeal bills, the majority party continues to pursue a reckless path no matter the human cost. As the Senate moves toward votes on the fate of Obamacare this week, we must continue to hold our elected leaders accountable on behalf of those with the most to lose.” – Max Richtman, President and CEO, National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare
