News Release

“The challenges facing Social Security’s new Commissioner will require a leader with both administrative experience and a deep understanding of the Social Security program — Carolyn Colvin is that person.  As America’s baby boomers retire, the Social Security Administration has seen a 27% increase in claims for retirement benefits.  In spite of this growing need, Congress continues to cut the agency’s operating budget. The SSA’s new Commissioner must continue to find ways to handle the fiscal reality of an operating budget, which for 3 years in a row, has been nearly a billion dollars less than requested.

Social Security is funded by America’s workers and ultimately touches the lives of virtually every American family.  Contrary to the political rhetoric of some in Washington on a quest to cut benefits or privatize the program, Social Security is an American success story which demands strong leadership from the new SSA Commissioner.

For more than 30 years, our organization has been one of the country’s largest and most effective advocates for the Social Security program so we don’t make this recommendation lightly.  We understand the vital role the SSA Commissioner plays in helping define Social Security’s future and believe Carolyn Colvin is uniquely qualified to provide the leadership necessary to navigate this difficult political environment ensuring Social Security remains strong now and for generations to come.” …Max Richtman, NCPSSM President/CEO
