“Linda McMahon’s proposal that Social Security should be shut down through a legislative “sunset” provision because it soon ‘will not exist’ ranks on top of the list of candidates’ bad ideas this political season and shows a complete lack of understanding about Social Security’s funding. Connecticut residents deserve to have a Senator who -- at the minimum -- understands the basics of programs which touch the lives of virtually every American family and who also supports them rather than wanting to shut them down.
With a little research, Ms. McMahon would find that Social Security is fully funded for decades to come. Even if no changes were made to the program it would still provide 75% of benefits to retirees. By no stretch of the imagination will Social Security cease to exist. America needs members of Congress who understand the programs under their purview and the importance they play in the lives of their constituents. “Sunsetting” Social Security is a radical plan that would hurt generations of American retirees based solely on a politician’s lack of understanding about how the program works.
