Ryan Selection Sends Clear Message to Seniors

"Governor Romney signaled his plans to decimate Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid today by selecting Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate.  Of all the candidates on Mr. Romney's nominee list, none has been a more vocal opponent of American's vital social insurance safety net than Congressman Ryan.  Ryan supports dismantling the earned Social Security and Medicare benefits of current and future beneficiaries. And, he is determined to decimate our nation's compassionate response to the health care needs of the most vulnerable of our society by gutting Medicaid.

Ryan says that he does not duck the tough issues, but if he is elected, Americans better duck and cover. If he has his way, there will be little left of the social insurance which protect seniors, the disabled, survivors and children from the hazards and vicissitudes of life.

Ryan's budget, his signature legislative scheme, would end traditional Medicare as we know it and leaves seniors at the mercy of private insurance companies. Ryan wants to raise the Medicare eligibility age from 65 to 67 and cut seniors' prescription drug coverage, preventive care services and Medicaid nursing home benefits.  In addition, the Ryan budget would set up a process for Congress and the President to automatically consider cuts to Social Security every year through "fast track" legislative procedures.

Americans want to know that someone is fighting for them. The selection of Paul Ryan as Governor Romney's Vice Presidential nominee clearly demonstrates that this ticket will guarantee a knockout punch to the future well-being of middle class Americans."

We will not let this happen without a fight that would put the Vietnam riots to shame. And since carrying weaponry is something the right defends, there will more opportunities for more mass slaughters, right? Why not go back to the pre-Civil War borders & let the right wing run their show there for those who like the values of the red neck racists. For those who want to continue civil rights & a ban on weapons & slavery, they can move north & we can build that wall the right wing loves so much along the Mexico border between the northern states & southern states & see how long it takes for the war to resume, modern style. After all, everyone's in such a rush to destroy the planet anyway. I'm sure the rest of the planet would be pleased to see the U-S totally destroyed & out of their hair.

I agree with your assessment of the Romney/Ryan ticket. They represent a grave threat to social security and medicare. Paul Ryan is the leader in the attempt to destroy medicare and it sends a message that Mitt Romney has chosen him to be his running mate.

I believe that the NCPSSM must take firm action by running ads explaining the danger they represent to Social Security and Medicare and endorse the Obama/Biden team. We must react to this threat with the seriousness it deserves.

Ayn Rand, like supply side economics, has been completely discredited.

In the face of massive unemployment, Republicans decided, against advice of our best economists, that austerity should be at the top of the agenda. In many states this resulted in massive public sector layoffs, degradation of services, and more unemployment. Since unemployment was certain to go up with their policy, many of us think they intend to crash the economy to win election. History shows austerity doesn't counter recession. Ask the Europeans. Paul Krugman, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics, elaborates this in his book: End This Depression Now!

Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid have been the most successful programs this country has ever known. Even staunch Republicans declare, "Keep your government paws off my Medicare." To dismantle these programs would surely bring our citizens into the streets like Egypt or Greece.

The fact that these people on the Right are pushing the envelope tells me they know they are going to be defeated in the 2012 elections but want to try out all sorts of outrageous things to see how far they can get and what does and does not work. This only means the Right-wing intends to have another run at this in the future, until they can achieve their goal of taking from working class and poor people the very safety nets they need the most.

The preservation of these programs is a must, and in the future we need to replenish, expand and beef-up these programs to meet society's needs.
