HPIM1520-compressedFor millions of American seniors, Social Security has been the one stable source of income they can count on during this economic recession.  That’s why news that next year could be the first time beneficiaries won’t receive a cost of living adjustment  since it was created in 1975 is especially troubling.   There are several bills newly introduced in Congress, which would provide emergency relief to seniors in the form of a one-time COLA payment.   Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) are sponsors of the “Emergency Senior Citizens Relief Act”, which would provide a $250 one-time COLA payment in 2010. National Committee members and supporters are rallying support for COLA relief and our President/CEO, Barbara Kennelly, delivered 120,000 petitions to members of Congress at a Capitol Hill news conference.
